Hello!

My name is Grace Rients and I am a Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist (English/Spanish). I joined the Marcfirst team at the beginning of June after graduating with my master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University in May! I am going to be completing a series of posts on Early Language development where I will also touch on the effects of bilingualism on language development.

Today, I want to share a resource from my professional organization, the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA), that details language milestones from birth-5 years of age. Speech and language are rapidly growing though out early childhood and it can be difficult to know if your child is meeting their speech and language developmental milestones, let alone simple ways in which YOU can enrich language in the home.

The good news is that all children benefit from language rich environments and language enrichment can be as simple as speaking with your child about what you see on a walk, babbling back to your baby, offering simple choices, making silly car/animal sounds, and reading to your child.

This is meant to be a resource for all parents to learn more about language development and ways to enrich language in your home. As a reminder, all children develop at their own pace and differences in development do not always mean your child qualifies for intervention, especially if your child speaks more than one language. If you are concerned about your child’s speech and language development, consult with your pediatrician about a referral to a local Speech Language Pathologist.

Me llamo Grace Rients y soy una patóloga de habla y lenguaje bilingüe (ingles/español). Se unía al equipo en Marfirst al principio de junio después de gradúame con una mastería de la Universidad de Eastern Illinois en mayo. Voy a completar una serie de publicas sobre el desarrollo de lenguaje temprano y de los efectos de bilingüismo en el desarrollo de lenguaje.

Hoy, quiero compartir un recurso de mi organización profesional, el American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA), que dale detalles de los hitos de lenguaje desde nacimiento a cinco años. Habla y lenguaje son habilidades que crecen y cambian muy rápidamente en niñez temprano y puede ser difícil a saber si su niño/a esta cumplido con sus metas de habla y lenguaje, y mucho menos sobre las cosas simples que TÚ puedes hacer para enriquecer lenguaje en su casa.

La noticia buena es que todos los niños(as) pueden tener ventajas de ambientes con abundante lenguaje y el enriquecimiento de lenguaje puede ser tan simple como hablando con su niño sobre que vez durante una camina, balbuceando con su bebé, ofreciendo opciones simples, haciendo ruidos de carros o animales, y leyendo a su niño/a.

Eso es un recurso para los padres para aprender más de desarrollo de lenguaje y maneras en que puede enriquecer el uso de lenguaje en su casa. Como un recuerdo, todos los niños desarrollan a su propio ritmo y diferencias en desarrollo no significa que su niño necesita intervención en cada caso, especialmente cuando su niño/a habla más de un idioma. Si tienes preocupaciones del desarrollo de habla y lenguaje de su niño/a, hable con su pediatra de un referente a un patólogo de habla y lenguaje.
